My Review:
While this is the second book in the Wind River Chronicles series it can be read as a stand-alone novel. However, a few scenes will make more sense if you have read the first book.
The first book in the Wind River Chronicles was about Jenny, with Rob and Maddie as her traveling companions. Songs in the Storm has a similar storyline, only it is told from Maddie and Rob's perspective and Jenny is their traveling companion. I feel like this information should have been conveyed in the synopsis, especially since some of the scenes were the exact same and I started to feel like I had read this book before. However, once they get to Wyoming, the story is new. There are several references to events that happened in the first book past that point, so I would advise reading book one first.
Overall, I enjoyed this story. I learned a lot about sheep herding and tuberculous, especially as it was understood at that point in history. I felt like the story started slow, the middle moved quickly, then came to a slow ending. It was a satisfactory ending, although it did leave room for another story, should the author choose to go that direction.
Thank you to JustRead Publicity Tours and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Synopsis:
The blood on the handkerchief changed everything.
The
year 1900 promises to be a good one for Rob and Maddie Skivington.
Recently married, they look forward to building a home near family and
friends in the busy industrial city of Newark where Rob owns a fledgling
jewelry business. Then, an irritating cough that has plagued Rob for
months turns out to be something far more insidious: tuberculosis.
When
Rob’s doctor suggests a change in environment and climate, they sell
their business and head to Wyoming in a desperate quest for health. They
soon find themselves pitted not only against the harsh environment and
natural predators, but also against a group of ranchers who seem
determined to send them back to Newark.
But sometimes the
strongest storms of all are those that rage within. When despair and
loneliness and tragedy strike, the couple must turn to God to help them
weather those onslaughts or risk being torn apart.
Another lovely review Cindy.
