Behind the scenes

Title: Behind the Scenes (audio)

Series: Apart From the Crowd #1

Author: Jen Turano

Narrator: Lauren Ezzo

Genre: Historical Fiction, Humor, Christian fiction, romance

Publisher: Two Words Publishing

Source: Hoopla

My review:

I adore Jen Turano's writing, her unique characters, and the wit that zings through her stories. However, this is my least favorite of all the books of hers I have read.

I really enjoy hearing Lauren Ezzo narrate, she did a wonderful job with this book!

The book wasn't awful, I did like it. In fact, I loved the beginning. I enjoyed the nod to Cinderella, her unique characters (especially their names), and the general story line.

Somewhere in the middle, the book started to go south for me. Maybe it was the way Asher laughed at Permilia in a rather serious moment, and then later spoke to her in a condescending tone. I can't stand that, intentional or not, it grates. Plus, the story really dragged. There was a lot of family drama that went on too long and could have been wrapped up sooner. The same for the end.

Overall, I liked it, and I think I will continue the series. I will also continue to read Turano's books.

★★★/5

Synopsis (Goodreads):

Miss Permilia Griswold, the wallflower behind "The Quill" gossip column, knows everything that goes on in the ballrooms of New York. When she overhears a threat against the estimable Mr. Asher Rutherford, she's determined to warn him. Away from society's spotlight, Asher and Permilia discover there's more going on behind the scenes than they anticipated.

    1. Mareli, she writes historical fiction with humor, usually I LOVE them, but this one was just okay.

  3. Definitely not her best work if you only gave it 3 stars. That's too bad. I like her books, at least the few that I've read. :)

  4. I have seen quite a few of Turano's books over the years due to FLF, and you are not the only one who has liked this one the least, for sure.
