Still Waters

Title: Still Waters

Series: The Amish of Shepherd's Hill #2

Author: Patricia Johns

Publisher: Bethany House

Genre: Christian Fiction, Amish

My Review:

Still Waters is the second book in The Amish of Shepherd's Creek series, but can easily be read as a standalone novel. There is enough explanation in this book that you wouldn't miss much, but I will always recommend reading the series in order!

Beth Peachy is struggling with staying Amish or going English. She doesn't mind the rules as much as she wants more. More education, more freedom, for things to be easier. When she goes to Lancaster County to care for Mammi, she reconnects with Danny, but still struggles with what is right for her. However, to have a relationship with him, she would have to stay Amish.

Read for:

  • Surprising storyline
  • family secrets
  • complicated dynamics
  • dementia rep
I don't know what else to say without giving spoilers. I enjoyed this story and was sad when it ended. There are still parts of the story that will be carried over into the next book, and I am here for it.

Thank you to the author and Bethany House for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Synopsis (Goodreads):

Unsure of her future within the Amish community, Beth Peachy arrives in Lancaster County to care for her ailing grandmother for the summer at her lake house. Yet with dementia threatening to steal away Mammi's memories, Beth's visit quickly evolves into an urgent quest for the answers to questions that her relatives seem determined to avoid. How can Beth possibly make a lifelong vow to the Amish church when her own family is concealing so much of the past from her?

Beth's childhood friend Danny Lapp faces his own dilemma as his ex-Amish older brother turns his back on their wholesome family upbringing, dishonoring his Plain heritage. Struggling to find some sort of connection with his brother despite their deep difference of opinion, Danny is determined to find a solution before church leadership becomes involved. As Beth and Danny reconnect and seek to help each other in the search for answers, they find themselves stirring up not only surprising revelations about the past, but questions about a possible future together.

Bestselling author Patricia Johns's latest novel is a can't-put-down mix of romance, family secrets, and life within the cloistered Amish community.

  1. Looks like a great book. My mom loved Amish romance books.

  2. Sounds like a good read, but I'm not sure I could do with a sad ending!

  3. I really like Amish novels (though you can't always get them in the UK). I'm glad you point out the dementia rep as that's something that's uncomfortable to read about just now.

    1. Liz, I try to put things in there like that because it can be hard for some people to read. I am avoiding some things right now as well, at least when I can.
