My Review:
I was looking forward to Marcus's story, and it did not disappoint.
Charlotte is outspoken and the bane of her family's existence. Her mother is embarrassed by her outspoken ways, and her father is done with them. She will either find herself a suitable husband this season, or she will be shipped off to a spinster aunt.
Marcus is not ready for marriage. He likes his life just the way it is. However, enduring pressure from all sides, he quickly enters into a marriage just to get everyone off his back. No worries, though, it will not change a thing. He will put Charlotte in a compartmentalized box, and she will not interfere with anything he does. Poor Marcus thinks everything can be compartmentalized and not bleed over into other areas of his life. He should know with a mother and a sister that women do not tend to stay where you want them, LOL. Especially a headstrong woman.
I enjoyed this story. Marcus and Charlotte are a perfect match. They both strive to do good and help others.
The Gentleman Spy is the second book in the series, and as a thread from the first book continues into this one, I think the books should be read in order.
★★★★/5
Synopsis (Goodreads):
When Marcus Haverly's father and older brother
unexpectedly pass away, the new Duke of Haverly is saddled with a title
he never expected to bear—and more eyes suddenly turned toward his life
than a secret agent for the Crown can afford.
To thwart the
plans of the rest of his scheming family, the duke impulsively marries
one of the Season's young debutantes. After all, a properly raised
noblewoman is meek and mild. Sequestering Lady Charlotte in the country
and getting on with his work as a spy should be easy.
His new
bride has other ideas. No shrinking violet, she's determined to take her
place as his wife, front and center—no hiding in rustication. As a
duchess, she can use her position to follow her call from God and help
the lowest of society: the women forced into prostitution because they
have no skills or hope. But these philanthropic, reforming endeavors are
not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she'd
remain in the background as he ordered.
Can the duke succeed in
relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are
threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?
