My review:
The Second Sister is an emotional book about second chances.
I am having a hard time putting my thoughts in order to write a review, mainly because I didn't love the story, but I didn't hate it either.I found the story to be a slow read and the only thing that kept me engaged was wanting to know who a particular person was (I won't say name or give spoilers). I think one of the things that made it harder to read was the political side of it. There are also really long stretches of narrative without dialogue which is another thing I do not like in books.
This is a fairly clean read with minor profanity. If you enjoy a family drama/second chance romance book with political elements then you will enjoy this book. If these things don't excite you, skip it.
★★★/5
Synopsis (from Goodreads):
From New York Times bestselling
author Marie Bostwick comes an emotionally rich, inspiring new novel
about family, second chances--and the connections that bring women
together in hope and healing. . .
Years of long workdays and
little sleep as a political campaigner are about to pay off now that
Lucy Toomey's boss is entering the White House. But when her estranged
older sister, Alice, unexpectedly dies, Lucy is drawn back to Nilson's
Bay, her small, close-knit, Wisconsin hometown.
An accident in
her teens left Alice mentally impaired, and she was content to stay in
Nilson's Bay. Lucy, meanwhile, got out and never looked back. But now,
to meet the terms of Alice's eccentric will, Lucy has taken up temporary
residence in her sister's cottage--and begins to see the town, and
Alice's life, anew. Alice's diverse group of friends appears to have
little in common besides an interest in quilting. Yet deep affection for
Alice united them and soon Lucy, too, is brought into the fold as they
share problems and stories. And as she finds warmth and support in this
new circle, Lucy begins to understand this will be her sister's enduring
gift--a chance to move beyond her difficult past, and find what she has
long been missing. . .
Vicki, yes, I know a lot of people who LOVED this book, so I would give it a try later, but not when you are in a reading slump! I hope you find a book that brings you out of it. I don't know your genre preferences or I would give you a few suggestions :)
ReplyDeleteSlow reads are hard for me to review, too, because I never seem to love them, but I don't hate them either. They're just somewhere in that forgettable middle.
ReplyDeleteLark, exactly!!! Thanks for stopping by :)
DeleteI love the sound of the synopsis. I love second chances too. Nice review, Cindy. Thanks for the warning that it's a bit slow in the middle.
ReplyDeleteWendy, I thought the synopsis sounded great too. Plus it was recommended to me, so I thought I would give it a try.
