My Review:
Critical Threat is the third in the Extreme Measures series. While it could be read as a stand-alone novel, the series follows four friends and would be best to be read in order.
Critical Threat is a fast-paced, intense, action-packed thriller. Eason sets the stage with the opening scene of a news station mentioning a third victim of a serial killer, comparing it to Peter Romanos, another serial killer in prison. The killer turns off the newscast, and we get his thoughts on why he believes Peter got caught and why he won't.
In the next chapter, we meet Grace and her co-workers. We also meet Sam, who will be helping to find the serial killer. In this scene, there are pretty detailed descriptions of the killer's MO. The descriptions are not for the faint of heart and can be skimmed through because the story is worth it. Also, the details are needed for the story.
There are quite a few things in this story that I figured out early on. That does not normally happen in a suspense novel. I don't know if I was extra observant this time or if the writing wasn't as tight. Regardless, I still enjoyed the story and didn't figure out everything. I would recommend this one to those who prefer stories high on suspense and low on romance.
★★★★/4
Synopsis (Goodreads):
FBI Special Agent Grace Billingsley tracks
serial killers, using her skills as a psychiatrist and behavioral
analyst to get dangerous people off the street and safely behind bars.
But prison psychiatrist Sam Monroe knows that just because a killer is
incarcerated doesn't mean they're not a threat. His own father, Peter,
is a serial killer--in prison but certainly not out of Sam's life, as
much as he wishes he was.
When bodies start showing up with
Peter's MO, Sam and Grace are both called in to consult. They've met
before--and though Grace thought they'd made a real connection, Sam
ghosted her. They'll have to get past the awkwardness and mistrust to
solve this case--especially because it's about to get personal.
I like the sound of this whole series. Trilogy? Whatever. I love a good romantic suspense novel. :D
