My Review:
Aunt Crystal and The Vowel Towels is Sandy Ryerse's debut novel. Written for children in the early elementary years, it would be a great addition to any school or home library.
Todd is super excited to have turned eight and even more excited that his Aunt Crystal is coming to visit. She always has the best gifts. However, Todd is underwhelmed by her gift of vowel towels. It's not that towels aren't a great gift, but what eight-year-old wants them as a gift?
Todd quickly learns that being eight is not as easy as he anticipated. He also realizes these are no ordinary towels. Todd learns it is not easy getting older, but sometimes even the blandest gifts can turn into something magical.
This book will appeal to early readers who are getting into chapter books without pictures. It is a cute, quick read. Children might even learn a thing or two about vowels along the way.
Thank you to Sandy Ryerse for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
★★★★/5
Synopsis (Goodreads):
The eight-year-old life is looking easy-peasy
until Todd's quirky Aunt Crystal gives him a birthday present way
blander than plain six vowel-themed bath towels. Who wants to think
about spelling in the shower? But when elf-sized elephants,
umbrella-carrying unicorns, and a host of other vowel-inspired guests
join him each time he uses a towel, Todd realizes learning about AEIOU
& sometimes Y could have been his Aunt's sneaky plan all along.
Those bland vowel towels are also undeniably, outrageously, and
indescribably the best birthday present ever!
Kids will find that
life will sometimes take them down some hard paths full of twists and
turns, curves and chaos. This fun little story will show them to hold on
tight and feel the wind in their hair as they ride through!
What
a fun way to stretch your child's knowledge of the English language
while introducing them to hockey greats, magic realism, historical
figures, and a sci-fi hero.
A great Grandmother-grandchild read-together book!
Teachers,
this is a fun way to refresh your grade 2's and 3's on everything
vowels! There's even a test inside that you can copy and hand out!
