My Review:
I enjoy Susan May Warren's books, and The Christmas Bowl is no different.
Marianne is excited about the holidays and having all her kids home for the holidays. As they start calling to say they won't be home for Thanksgiving, it's okay, because they will still have Christmas. Soon, Marianne finds herself in several situations outside of her comfort zone. As she serves at her church, she goes on a quest to understand the true meaning of hospitality.
If you are close to an empty nest, you will relate to Marianne. It was especially poignant when she took a stroll down memory lane with her kid's Christmas ornaments. This is something we do every year with our kids. Now that they are adults, I know we won't have many more years where we are all together for Christmas.
This is a quick read, where Marianne learns the true meaning of the season. Maybe we can learn a lesson as well.
★★★/5
Synopsis (Goodreads):
Christmas is a magical season. Except for this year.
Marianne
Wallace loves the holidays. From dressing the tree to her traditional
Christmas dinner, it’s all about creating memories for her family. But
when her children begin to leave home—and their traditions—behind, she
has one last chance to create a holiday they’ll never forget.
Unfortunately,
she’s soon in over her head, and one impulsive decision leads to a
string of events that will change the way her family—even her small
Minnesota town—sees the Christmas season.
I love these holiday books that explore the true meaning of the season!
ReplyDeleteEthan, yes, they are great!
DeleteI read this a few years ago and was approaching the empty nest season. I agree, I could relate to Marianne. It was an enjoyable, meaningful read.
ReplyDeleteGretchen, Someone had recommended it as a light, humorous read, which wasn't quite what I got out of it.
DeleteThis sounds like a cute holiday read.
ReplyDeleteLark, it is.
