My Review:
Small Town Harmony is the second book in Milla Holt's Rhapsody of Grace series The series follows three brothers and is best read in order.
Set in the UK, this story follows Ezra and Martha (aka Morgan). For the last three years of their marriage, Martha has been on tour and Ezra has not been going with her. This, among other things, has put a serious strain on their marriage.
Ezra and Martha have both made mistakes. They have both put other things or people above their marriage and have not had good communication. Martha finally comes home from the tour, but she is bitter about rumors of Ezra, and insecure. Instead of talking to him at any point in their marriage (the issue has been ongoing for years), she simply doesn't talk to him about it, while the issue festers.
Martha is too naïve at times. She has traveled around the world and is old enough to realize that her actions have consequences. There is a particular scene in the story where I am really mad at her and the stupid decision she made (you will know when you get there).
Marriage is a balance acting. It thrives on honest communication, and it shrivels up when we allow things to come between us. That is this story. The delicate art of trying to figure out where they went wrong, and how they can find their balance again. They are both at fault, but they are also both willing to work on their marriage.
This story would stay with me when I would sit it down to go do other things. I was trying to take a nap but I couldn't because I was stewing over Martha's decisions 😂. As you read, you feel like you are part of the story, watching it play out in real-time. I finished it a few days ago, and I am still thinking about it.
I enjoyed the story. It tackled meatier issues without feeling too heavy. The author handled the topic well, the story moved at a steady pace, and both main characters experienced measurable character growth. I was not quite ready to leave this family behind. I can't wait to read Zach's story in Old Town Symphony.
Thank you to JustReads Publicity for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Synopsis (Amazon):
Faith, fame, and family collide as a Christian
music power couple hides a secret discord.Ezra Falconer’s career with
his brothers’ band always took center stage while his shy wife Martha
was content to play a supporting role in the background. That all
changed when Martha’s hidden talent was discovered and she became a
breakout singing star. Shedding her frumpy image, her old-timey name,
and 100 extra pounds, she transformed into the sultry and sophisticated
“Morgan.”
Ezra, grappling with his own career setbacks, struggles
to reconcile the confident superstar with the unassuming woman he
married.
Martha returns from a sell-out international tour to a
marriage on shaky ground. Unprepared for the pressures of fame, she
navigates new opportunities that threaten to pull her and her husband
even further apart.
As they hide their crumbling marriage from
family, friends and fans, Ezra and Martha are asked to collaborate on a
charity album, forcing them to confront the growing silence between
them. How can they rediscover harmony while they’re singing in different
keys?
Honest communication is important in every relationship!
ReplyDeleteLark, for sure!
DeleteThanks so much for sharing your thoughts about Small Town Harmony, Cindy!
ReplyDeleteYes, I knew some readers might struggle with Martha. 😬But I thought it was important to show her journey, including the difficult parts.
Sadly, I've known many people who've drifted away from the Lord. In her extended foreign tour, away from her family and church community, Martha's living in an echo chamber where everyone's celebrating values that are far from wholesome and Godly. Her poor decisions seem to be "rewarded" by more financial success and acclaim.
I do hope that her redemption makes up for her bad behaviour!
Thanks so much once again, and I'm working hard on Book 3!
Milla, her redemption absolutely makes up for her behavior! I had a specific incident in mind when I wrote that, and am still thinking about it, LOL, but that is also a sign of good writing, it sticks with you.
DeleteLOL, now you're making me wonder which incident because she did at least two sketchy things that might qualify! 😅
DeleteBut thank you so much for sticking with the story for the full journey. I appreciate that so much. It's hard to show redemption when there's little or nothing to redeem.
So very true!
