20 Books of Summer & Big Book Challenge 2025

It's no secret that I have been trying to whittle down my physical TBR shelves, as
well as my
Goodreads shelf (although I am continually adding to that one 😂).

So, when I saw the 20 books of summer challenge going around again, I decided to immediately jump on the bandwagon!! There are books from previous years that I STILL haven't read.

The details are flexible...you can choose 10, 15, or 20 books for the summer, then read AND review them.

If your goal gets overwhelming you can drop down the number of books you want to read.

You can plan your list in advance and change it if you need to, or simply keep track as you go.

That's pretty much it. You can head over to this year's new hosts, AnnaBookBell and Emma of Words and Peace to see all the details and see who is participating...and add your link if you want to join in the fun. The challenge runs from June 1-August 31, 2025. They have also added a book bingo which looks fun.

I am planning to read 20 books for this challenge. I don't know if I will try for a Bingo or not, but maybe 😂, as long as it doesn't start feeling stressful.

I am a planner so I will plan some of my books, but not all. (From when I started this post, to now, I had to drop 2 books because I already read them, LOL). That leaves room for some mood reading, which seems to change quite a bit recently.

Normally I read about 20 books in a month, but this summer is going to be wonky with us moving and me trying to get a new job, so I will do my best to get in these 12 this summer. Obviously, I am hoping for quite a bit more, LOL!

The goal of the Big Book Summer Challenge is to read at least one book that has 400+ pages (any genre, any age). The Challenge runs from May 23rd-September 1st and is hosted by Sue at Book by Book. You can head over to her blog for all the details.

I am going to set my goal at 3, if I do more, great, if not, at least I (hopefully) will get three in. I OWN 11 physical books and 21 Kindle books with 400+ pages, and I have 42 that I want to read on my Goodreads TBR, not counting anthologies.

I decided to do one that I own, one I own on my Kindle, and one from my want to read list.

North and South by Elizbeth Gaskell has been on my TBR for quite a while. In fact, it was one of the big books I wanted to read in the summer of 2023, but it didn't happen. This could be the year!
I own Bittersweet by Cathy Marie Hake and would like to get it read. First, I need to read the first book in the series.
I own Blessing Bentley by Chautona Havig on my Kindle, and I always forget about it. It looks and sounds fun so hopefully, I will not forget it this summer!

Are you participating in either one (or both) of these challenges? What books are you hoping to read this summer? Which of these do you recommend I read first?!

  1. Good luck with both of these challenges, Cindy. I am participating in 20 Books of Summer and have prechosen my books and am having a hard time waiting until June 1st to start them. I have a hard time with long books, but have one on my TBR I want to get read sooner rather than later, so maybe setting that goal would get me to actually read it.

    1. Linda, it is! I am not sure if I will get in as much reading as I normally do, but I might.

  5. I'm doing the 20 Books of Summer again this year. I love how flexible it is, so it never feels too stressful.

I just started THE UNSELECTED JOURNALS OF EMMA M. LION. We're supposed to have read the first three volumes for book club tonight. Good thing they're short! LOL

    Good luck with your challenges!

  7. I have had one or two books on my list that I've wanted to start already too. I've been able to resist so far. So here's hoping I'll be able to hold out a couple more days! LOL *fingers crossed* Hope all goes well with your move and trying to find a good job!

  9. You have a lot of good ones on this list! I have the Sharon Mondragon one too, of course. There are plenty of light and fun ones too! Good luck with North & South. I watched the mini-series of it this winter and enjoyed it. I should read the book at some point.
