The Last Lieutenant

Title: The Last Lieutenant

Series: Serendipity & Secrets #1

Author: Erica Vetsch

Narrator: Mary Sarah

Source: Hoopla

My Review:

The Lost Lieutenant is the first book in the Serendipity & Secrets series by Erica Vetsch. My only regret is letting it languish on my TBR for so long.

This one caught my attention from the beginning, and while I enjoyed the audio narration, at times I found myself wishing I had the paperback so I could read faster, and have it to read when I couldn't listen.

Anyway, it is amazing to me that Diana grew up as well-rounded as she did, despite the scoundrels surrounding her. She is full of grace, grit, and determination, which she needs when the Prince Regent forces her to marry a stranger.

Evan is trying to heal from his war wound. He doesn't remember his heroic efforts, nor does he want to be praised for them. All he wants to do is recover and get back on the battlefield. Unfortunately for him, he saved the Prince Regent's godson, so he must be honored. As if that is not enough, the Prince decrees that he will marry Diana. Evan is not in the headspace for marriage; again, he just wants to heal. However, you don't say no to the Prince Regent.

This story is everything you could want in a Regency romance. You have scoundrels, the good guys, an over involved Prince Regent, secrets, intrigue, and a great cast of characters. I can't wait to dive into the second book, which is Marcus's story (he has a strong role in this story as well).

★★★★/5

Synopsis (Goodreads):

He's doing what he can to save the Prince Regent's life . . . but can he save his new marriage as well? Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero--he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn't think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn't have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there's something he can't quite remember. It's important, dangerous--and if he doesn't recall it in time, will jeopardize not only his marriage but someone's very life.

Readers who enjoy Julie Klassen, Carolyn Miller, and Kristi Ann Hunter will love diving into this brand-new Regency series filled with suspense, aristocratic struggles, and a firm foundation of faith.
