Approaching the Almighty: 100 Prayers of A. W. Tozer

Title: Approaching the Almighty: 100 Prayers of A. W. Tozer

Author: A. W. Tozer, complied by Phil Shappard

Publisher: Moody Publisher

Genre: Christian Nonfiction, Prayer

Source: Moody Publisher

My Review:

Approaching the Almighty has a beautiful hardcover. The book is divided into ten sections, with an introduction to each section. This book is the transcribed prayers of Tozer from his original sermon recordings.

I think a man is mighty unskillful in prayer if he has to unscramble himself, wash up and get a quick haircut and straighten himself out, trying to look decent as he walks into the presence of God. He should have been like that all the time. Children of God should be presentable all the time.

The ten sections of prayer are Jesus Christ, Blood of Christ, Word of God, Authenticity, Backsliding, Surrender, Penitential, Thankfulness, Intercession, and Spiritual Living.

God won't do what you can do. And there's no use for you to try to do what only God can do. And if we can get untangled on this one thing, so we're not trying to do what only God can do, and not asking God to do what we ought to go and do.

While Tozer's prayers have stood the test of time and are relevant, I couldn't help but find this one VERY relevant to our world today (emphasis mine):

We pray for our country. Gracious Father, remember our country. Give us optimism. Give us hope, we pray. Give us courage to pray for a nation that seems to care nothing for itself.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is a Tozer fan or who enjoys books on prayer.

Thank you to Moody Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a favorable review. All thoughts and reviews are my own.

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Discover the never-before-published prayers of A. W. Tozer as he opens his sermons.

Is there a holier moment than when a preacher steps into the pulpit and opens the Scriptures before the people of the Lord? A. W. Tozer certainly understood the gravity and sanctity of that moment. His pulpit prayers reflect the holy awe that he experienced as he stood before God and the gathered congregation.

Although Tozer fans are familiar with his writings and sermons, now for the first time, Approaching the Almighty collects the prayers that Tozer offered as he stepped into the pulpit to preach. Phil Shappard, a Moody Radio manager whose job was to remaster the audiotapes of Tozer’s sermons, has collected and transcribed almost two hundred prayers that reveal the great preacher’s intimate walk with God.

The path to a rich prayer life is to pray alongside others whose faith is deep. Let Tozer’s pulpit prayers guide your own heart in its steadfast pursuit of God.
