Suddenly her sheriff was there. His steps sure and straight as if she was where he always knew she would be. Adele smoothed a hand over her hair and straightened on the bench. The sheriff walked right into the cell and sat beside her. So close they touched from knee to hip to shoulder. Yes, there were definitely things about Sheriff McMillan that Adele could get used to. If she was someone who wanted rainbows and cloud dances. But single moms and widows needed to keep their umbrellas ready, their boots on the ground and their hearts under wraps.

“I’m starving.” The sheriff stretched his legs out and crossed his boots at his ankles. “Want to get something to eat?”

“I’ve got a three cheese and meat lasagna that just needs to go into the oven.” Adele’s stomach rumbled and ruined any sweet talk she might’ve considered. But this was only an invitation in response to his offer. “The twins are sleeping over with their grandmother tonight. You can join me if you’d like. There’s more than enough to share.”

“I wasn’t asking you out to dinner so that you would cook for me.” Grady ran his hands over his legs.

“I love this town and the people in it,” Adele said. “But tonight, I don’t want to be around any of them. Sounds bad, doesn’t it?”

“It sounds understandable.” His eyebrows knit together, and he studied her. “You’re sure you want to be around me?”

“You aren’t really one of them.” Adele grinned. The sheriff had left town as soon as he’d received his high school diploma, and he hadn’t returned. Until now. He was made for more than Eagle Springs could ever give him. And one meal together wouldn’t change that.

“I feel like I should be offended.” Grady laughed and stood. He motioned toward the open cell door. “Come on. Let’s go put that lasagna in the oven.”

And Adele would put her interest on the shelf. After all, it was dinner, not a date.
