My review:
The Best We've Been by Beth K. Vogt is the third in the Thatcher Sister series. You will want to read them in order because the events of each book build upon each other, and the three sisters are in each book. You will want to read them closer together as it took me a hot minute to remember what happened in the first two books 😂
The Best We've Been is about the oldest sister, Johanna. She is the stereotypical oldest sister. She is bossy, stubborn, headstrong, and completely unlikeable, especially in the first two books and the beginning of this one. Many times I wanted to put this book down and quit reading, but I also had a strong desire to see how everything ended. By the end of the story, I was rooting for Johanna and understood her better.
The Best We've Been is another real and gritty story. The sisters and their relationship are messy and authentic. While this is Johanna's story, we also see more of Jillian and Payton's stories. Jillian also makes me mad with some of the choices she makes in the story. Payton was consistently the most likeable character.
Everything I really want to say is spoilery, so I will just say, I am glad I read this book. It has a beautiful ending, but not at all as you would expect. It is very much a story of healing and redemption, even though the faith elements are light. I highly recommend reading the entire series and getting to know the Thatcher sisters.

Synopsis (Goodreads):
How can you choose what is right for you when your decision will break the heart of someone you love?
Having
abandoned her childhood dream years ago, Johanna Thatcher knows what
she wants from life. Discovering that her fiancé was cheating on her
only convinces Johanna it’s best to maintain control and protect her
heart.
Despite years of distance and friction, Johanna and her
sisters, Jillian and Payton, have moved from a truce toward a fragile
friendship. But then Johanna reveals she has the one thing Jillian wants
most and may never have―and Johanna doesn’t want it. As Johanna
wrestles with a choice that will change her life and her relationships
with her sisters forever, the cracks in Jillian’s marriage and faith
deepen. Through it all, the Thatcher sisters must decide once and for
all what it means to be family.
I think it's great that you stayed with the book and got to understand Joanna better. I think it's the sign of a good writer to make an unlikeable character likeable.
