My review:

East of Evil is my first book by Joni M. Fisher. While it could read as a stand-alone novel, I recommend reading the series in order. An event toward the beginning of the book made me wish I had started at the beginning of the series.

Nefi Jenkins is attending Harvard University. She is already engaged when the story starts. She has two roommates, Cassie and Mutt (and it surprised me that the rooming was co-ed, especially in a Christian novel, but it was obvious they were all just friends). Nefi grew up in a remote village in Brazil. The story alludes to things that have happened in Nefi's past. She is a strong character with a strong bent toward justice.

The beginning of the story sucked me right in. I was eager to see what happened next, and by the end, I wondered how things would resolve. I did not see the ending coming.

There were a lot of moving parts to this story. There were also a lot of characters. The author did a great job setting them up, so it was clear who was who. Some things were predictable, but I think they were supposed to be. There's a lot I want to say, but I want to be careful of spoilers. While I enjoyed the story, I know I would have better understood all the relationships had I started the series at the beginning.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to review this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

★★★★/5

Synopsis (Goodreads):

A colossal fortune. A secret reaper. A young woman whose drive for due process makes her the target of dangerous people…

Nefi Jenkins dreams of becoming an FBI agent. After outing her parents’ heartless killer, the Harvard grad focuses on getting into a stellar criminal justice master’s degree program. But her career goals take a back seat when she inherits a ten-million-dollar trust from her late parents…with a hefty chunk gone.

Seeking the help of a forensic accountant, Nefi discovers a cunning thief has been stealing from her inheritance. And with her legacy at stake, the hidden enemy’s scheme to swipe her cash could turn deadly.

Can Nefi restore her parent’s wealth before her investigation turns fatal?

East of Evil is the fourth book in the page-turning conclusion of the Compass Crimes suspense series.

  2. Thank you for reading and giving a fair and honest review. I will take this to heart and provide more background on characters in each story within the next series. While they become oh-so-familiar to me after many drafts, the characters are all new to the reader in each book.
