It's All Under Control

Title: It's All Under Control

Author: Jennifer Dukes Lee

My Review:

In a world where everything seems to be out of control, how timely to read It's All Under Control by Jennifer Dukes Lee. Did my perspective suddenly shift, and now I feel like everything is under control? No. But I am thankful for all the nuggets of wisdom the author has packed into this book.

Spiritual surrender is more complex than any Christian platitude.

One of the things I appreciate about this author's writing is the conversational tone she employs as she dives into a book about control. She is not writing as one who has everything in control, but as one who knows the One who has it all under control. Her stories are mine, and I imagine they are yours. They are relatable and encouraging.

Without a well-marked map, we try to draw our own. We execute plans to control this out-of-control lie because we fear what will happen if we don't.

I struggle with control. I like for everything to go according to the plans I have made, and I can be short-sighted and impulsive. One of the things that the author discusses is the three control characters: the driver, the devoter, and the darling. While I have characteristics of all three, I definitely identify as a devoter, and having read this book, I better understand this tendency and how to rely on God, instead of myself. That doesn't mean I am perfect, or that I have it all figured out, because I am not and I don't. I am a work in progress, and have been for years. I imagine it is something I will still be working on for years to come.

We have no clue what God is doing in places we cannot see.

I made quite a few highlights in this book, and it is one I can see the value in reading again. I did a slow read of it, but I don't feel like I have processed everything I have read. If you tend to be somewhat of a control freak, I highly recommend this book. Or, if you know one, or live with one, reading this book can help you to understand them better.
