The Art of Victory

Title: The Art of Victory

Series: The Donovans #1

Author: Martha Keyes

Narrator: Ella Lynch

Source: Hoopla

My Review:

Diana declares war on Marmaduke Russel when he stands in the way of her dear friend Lucy marrying the one her heart desires. Side note: I love his name, so unique!

Diana is a strong foe, but Duke is an unflappable opponent. This enemies-to-more is cleverly done, with the humor taking the story up a notch. The battle of wills was entertaining, and I appreciate that there was no true meanness.

Overall, a delightful story, not going quite as expected, which made it even better. The audio narration is well done.

Synopsis (Goodreads):

Diana Donovan was raised aboard a naval ship on a steady diet of war strategy, so when her orphaned friend, Lucy, is denied a perfectly respectable love match by her controlling guardian, Diana sees an opportunity to put her battle knowledge to use in service of a deserving friend.

But Marmaduke Russell is not the middle-aged curmudgeon Diana is expecting. He is a maddeningly cool, unmarried gentleman who seems uniquely able to parry her tactics—and infuse her with even more determination to win. As battle ensues, though, it becomes clear that there may be more hearts in the balance than just Lucy's.
