First Line Friday #35-Song of Silence

We made it to Friday!! It has been a really long week around here. Any plans for the weekend? I plan to do some cleaning out, reading and blogging. Welcome back to First Line Friday hosted by Carrie at Reading is My SuperPower!! I am also linking up with Gilion on Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings. This is where you share the beginning of the book that you are reading. To join in the fun grab the book you are reading and leave a comment with the first line (or your link).  This week I am reading Song of Silence by Cynthia Ruchti. I am reading this one for Chantel's read your bookshelf challenge.

Lucy removed her glasses and watched Ellie's thin, thirteen-year-old fingers splay against the girl's too-flat stomach.

Book Beginnings:

Lucy removed her glasses and watched Ellie's thin, thirteen-year-old fingers splay against the girl's too-flat stomach.

"Try it," Lucy said.

"I don't have much breath."

"I know." The confession drilled so much deeper than it would have coming from any of Lucy's other students. "Please try."

About the book (from Goodreads):

Lucy and Charlie Tuttle agree on one thing: they're committed to each other for life. Trouble is, neither of them expected life to look like this. While Charlie retired early, Lucy is devoted to a long-term career . . . until the day she has no choice.

Forced to retire from her position as music educator in a small Midwestern K-8 school, Lucy can only watch helplessly as the program her father started years ago disintegrates before her eyes. As the music fades and a chasm separates her from the passion of her heart, Lucy wonders if her faith's song has gone silent, too. The musical score of her life seems to be missing all the notes.

When a simple misstep threatens to silence Lucy forever, a young boy and his soundless mother change the way she sees--and hears--everything.

Your turn! Grab the current book you are reading and post the first line in the comments! Then, click on the icons below and join the fun there too! Thank you all for coming by each week, I REALLY appreciate the support and comments 😀

“Beth Tremayne crept silently through the creaking doorway of the abandoned cottage as the first stokes of dawn painted the sky over the islands.”

  6. My first line is from Death at High Tide by Hannah Dennison - "I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean."

I read one of Cynthia Ruchti's books a few years ago and immediately wanted to read everything else she wrote. However, I haven't pick a single other one up yet! This one does sound emotional. I hope you enjoy it.

    1. Gretchen, that is how I felt when I read her book Facing the Dawn last year. It was one of my favorites for 2021, it's a must read! I read one more of hers, a nonfiction that came out toward the end of last year, and now I am reading this one. I am slowly playing catch up!

  11. I know this is off topic but whenever I see a piano outside I freak. Who would wreck a piano by submitting it to the elements? My Friday Quotes are here

    1. Anne, I know, right?! To my knowledge no pianos were harmed in the making of this cover ;)

  13. This weekend, I'm reading Their Unbreakable Bond by Deb Kastner. The first line is: It was the Be Back Shortly sign on the door of the gift shop, with an arrow pointing toward the barn, that had sent Stone Keller in this direction.
On my First Line Friday blog post, I featured To Treasure an Heiress by Rosenanna M. White: https://daniellegrandinetti.com/2022/01/21/to-treasure-an-heiress/
